A test-tube pregnancy?
Hi :) My wife and I would like children, but it seems difficult. What does the Bible say about getting pregnant using a test tube? Is this meddling with his creation?
Hi!
That’s great that you would like children!
The Bible of course does not say anything concrete about test-tube pregnancies. But it does say, right from the start in Genesis, that people should be fruitful and multiply. The Bible also says a lot about what a blessing and joy children are. It also talks about stewarding the creation, so research and work involving increasing our knowledge of medicine and health is very biblical. Bearing this in mind, we can also see that receiving help to have children is also according to God’s heart. Nevertheless, there are some ethical challenges posed by getting help to have children through artifical insemination.
Life starts at conception and this is perhaps the most challenging point if you want to get help with the test-tube method. This is because during this process many more eggs are fertilised than are used, so it leads to the destruction of lives which have already started. A lot of couples who want to get help to have children through the test-tube method have not thought enough about the consequences of this, and it has played on their conscience later on.
Another aspect of the test-tube method, which may not relate to you, is whose egg and whose sperm is used. In situations where the man does not produce good enough sperm, a sperm donor is often used. This poses a lot of ethical dilemmas. This is the same with egg donors, which is allowed in some countries. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the right to grow up with their biological parents and know them as far as possible. Having a child is not a human right, but children have the right to live with their parents as long as it is beneficial to them.
It is understandable that you want your own biological children. At the same time there are a lot of couples who have found it meaningful and right to adopt one or more children whose parents are not able to care for them. The Bible talks a lot about orphans, and we believe that there is a lot of blessing in choosing to adopt.
We wish you God’s blessing in the process.
Best wishes, boyandgirl.info
