HPV vaccine
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends HPV vaccines as part of routine vaccinations in all countries. The vaccines require two or three doses depending on a person’s age and immune status. Vaccinating girls around the ages of nine to thirteen is typically recommended. The vaccines provide protection for at least five to ten years. They protect against the form of HPV which causes at least 70 per cent of cervical cancer.
HPV can result in other forms of cancer in both men and women. Long-term HPV infection can result in both men and women having cancer of the mouth, the pharynx (part of the throat) and the anus. Men can also get cancer of the penis.
