Want to stop watching porn
Hi, I’m struggling with a habit of watching pornography and stuff like that at home. I want to give it up and try to keep myself as near celibate as possible until I get married. I’m wondering if it is possible for a man to stay away from all types of sex (masturbation, porn, intercourse and so on) for ever, or will there always come a time when you ‘burst’ – even literally?

Pornography presents a picture of sex that is totally detached from love and faithfulness, and gives a wrong idea of sex. It can be very habit-forming and can lead to an unnaturally strong sex drive. Pornography can also cause you to be aroused by things which you would otherwise think were unnatural, and make you want to perform sex acts that could be harmful. Keeping this in mind, it’s great that you want to stop using porn!
It’s totally possible to stop using porn; no one gets harmed by not having sex. There is no danger of ‘bursting’ even though you don’t have sex or masturbate. The body regulates itself if there’s no release in other ways, so there will be an occasional emission of sperm while you sleep. Getting involved in constructive hobbies may help you as you try to stop using pornography and masturbating. The more you focus on positive things, the easier it will be to avoid being driven by erotic desires. You will find this really helpful if you decide to get married at some point, as it will then be much easier to be faithful to your wife.
If you don’t manage to stop, we recommend that you talk to an adult you trust, for example a priest, pastor or counsellor. Sometimes it can be helpful to have someone who holds you accountable. It will be a lot less tempting to use internet pornography when you know that you will have to talk to someone about how things are going.
