Is Sex a Basic Need?

Most people long to find someone to share their life with. It’s also natural to want to become one sexually with that person and start a family together.

God has put these desires within us. He has made us in such a way that we want to find someone to marry, and sex is a gift that God has given to bond marriage partners more strongly together.

However, the fact that you have a desire doesn’t mean that it is a need that has to be met, like the basic needs of food, water or air. If we don’t get enough food or water we become ill and eventually die. We can only survive a few minutes without air. It is good to have our desires fulfilled, but we won’t die if we live without a spouse, or for that matter sex.

Even though sex in marriage is a good gift, it doesn’t mean that we need sex in order to have a good life. Lots of people live full lives as singles, and lots have good lives without sex. Lots of people say that waiting to have sex until they got married was a good investment. Sex is so much better when you only share it with the one person who means the most to you.
