Engagement

An engagement means that on a certain date a man and a woman have made a public decision to get married (see marriage). In many countries it is common for the woman to be given an engagement ring, which is often decorated with one or more diamonds. In other countries the custom is to buy gold rings for both partners; these are engraved with the partner’s name and date of engagement. The same rings are used after the wedding and are then called wedding rings.

An engaged couple have decided to get married, but they are not yet married. An engagement can therefore be broken if the couple find out that they do not want to get married after all. The Bible is very clear that sex only belongs within marriage, so engaged couples should wait to get married before having sex.
