I swear when it suits me

Why is it not okay to say fuck and damn when you are a Christian? These words are not mentioned in the Bible. Is it a sin to say those words? People have invented them anyway. Personally, God is the only thing I don't say, because to take the Lord’s name in vain is something the Bible says you shouldn't do.
I've heard that hell and dammit are also considered ugly words, but in a way it makes no sense that it should be a sin to say words like this "damn, it's hot" while having a conversation about damnation is not a sin. Or if you turn around and say "hell", that's a sin, but saying "I don't want to go to hell" is not.
So, the only thing mentioned in the Bible is that you should not abuse God's name. I have also heard that Jesus said that the way we speak reflects how we are on the inside. "For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him" (Matthew 12:34-35).
I swear when it suits me, but that doesn't mean I'm a bad person for doing so. I've been depressed for a long time, but at least I think I'm a kind and nice person. And I only say nice things about others, and if there is something bad to say about a person, I simply do not say it. But, according to Jesus, I guess I'm evil.

Thanks for your question!

You sound like a thoughtful and genuine person, and it's great that you only say nice things about others!

To answer your statement "according to Jesus, I must be evil" first: When you have accepted Jesus as your savior, you are saved by faith. It is not our works and whether we are "good" or " bad" people that make us saved and go to heaven, but by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

There are probably no biblical commandments that directly state that it is a sin to use words like "fuck" and "damn". These words have their origins in Christian words and expressions such as "damn" and "devil", so in a way they are actually mentioned in the Bible.

Furthermore, there are several other words and expressions that people have invented, as you say, that we consider to be swearing. Pronouncing such words in itself is not a sin. Words can be meaningless and as you say, they are just words. On the other hand, words are not just words! Many of these "swear words" are meant to be vulgar and offensive and can be hurtful and insulting to be exposed to. And the words we use help others to create a certain impression of us. The way we speak can determine who we attract or repel, and thus the words we use can determine who we make friends with, what job we get, etc. Words influence the circumstances around us whether we want them to or not.

As Christians, we have good reasons for not swearing, and there are several Bible verses that support the view that it is wrong to swear. Firstly, Jesus wants us as children of God to help others to come to faith in Him. Jesus said that as Christians we are to be "the salt of the earth and the light of the world" (Matt 5:13-16). The light and salt have important functions: The salt should, among other things, give flavor to the food and preserve it from decay. As Christians, we should have the power of light and salt in our dealings with people.

In Col 4:6 states: "Let your speech always be friendly, but seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Paul also writes in Rom 12:2 that we as Christians should not conform to the present world. If we choose to swear, we are conforming to the way the world behaves and speaks, and then we lose the power of salt. In Eph 4:29, Paul states: "Do not let unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

As Christians, we have Jesus as our role model. We must ask ourselves: What would Jesus do? Would He have been indifferent to the words He used in his dealings with other people?
