Abortion pill

The abortion pill is a pill that starts an abortion. It is used to start a medical abortion, usually during the first eight weeks of pregnancy. In a medical abortion the woman will usually first be given a pill (mifepristone) which destroys the foetus’s nutritional supply, and stretches the cervix. Then a second pill (misoprostol) is given, this makes the womb (uterus) reject the foetus, the amniotic fluid and the placenta. There is usually more bleeding than with a normal period, and some women may feel nauseous, vomit and have diarrhoea.
