Can we have sex when the woman has her period?
Hi. Can we have sex when the woman has her period? I’ve read about it in the Old Testament, but does this just refer to the people of Israel at that time, or Christians today? Are there any medical risks if we have sex when she has her period? Can it make it more difficult to get pregnant or increase the risk of a miscarriage?
Hi and thanks for your question!
The Old Testament contains a lot of laws which were meant for the Jews who lived before Jesus died on the cross for us. Among these laws there were many laws forbidding things that made them unclean, for example contact with dead bodies or menstrual blood. As Christians, living after the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are not bound by the same laws as the Jews were in the Old Testament. The laws and commandments which continue from the Old Testament to Christians are spoken of by Jesus in the gospels and in the letters of the New Testament.
Having sex when the woman has her period is not mentioned in the New Testament, and as Christians we do not become spiritually unclean by for example coming in contact with menstrual blood. Having sex during a woman’s menstrual cycle carries no medical risks as long as you have normal good hygiene, and sexual intercourse during menstruation has no consequences for the woman’s ability to become pregnant or the risk of having a miscarriage.
One thing the New Testament is just as clear about as the Old Testament is that sexual intercourse is only for marriage, and that we become spiritually unclean by having sex outside of the framework God has put in place in order to protect us. You can read more about what happens in the unseen, spiritual realm when two people have sex here:
The Invisible Reality of Sex
In marriage all sexual activity should be voluntary and nobody should be pushed to do something they don’t want to do by their partner. This also relates to having sex during the woman’s period. Thankfully we who live today can be totally cleansed and get a new start regardless of what we’ve done. In 1 John we read that ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness’ (1 John 1:9).
